Battle of Panipat in Light of Rediscovered Paintings

Description

The Marathas were the last indigenous empire-builders of India. They leapt into prominence suddenly and swiftly, but the rapid expansion of their empire was arrested by the defeat at the third battle of Panipat on 14 January 1761. Unfortunately, the authentic, comprehensive and analytical scholarly accounts of this momentous battle are woefully short in number. This work aims at filling this gap with the following:
‣ More than 80 rare paintings, photographs and maps that shed more light on the tactics, the strategy and the principal characters of the battle of Panipat.
‣ Details on the 21 primary characters who participated in the events leading up to the battle and the momentous battle itself, including many names not widely known from the Maratha and the Afghan side.
‣ Rare photographs and Treasures related to the battle of Panipat from the museums worldwide, including Kuwait National Museum, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Paris, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, Royal Armory, Leeds, Chester Beatty Library, Dublin, Agha Khan Museum, Toronto, Mehrangad Museum, Jodhpur, National Museum, Delhi, National Archives, Delhi, British Library, London, Metropolitan Museum, New York and Royal Asiatic Society, London, BISM and Peshwa Daftar, Pune, Sagar (Bundelkhand), Deeg, Gharonda, Sangli, Lahore and Shergarh (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan)
‣ Use of primary sources in Marathi, Urdu, Farsi, Pashto, Dari, English, and French including new sources unknown to the researchers of the Maratha history.
‣ Visual overview of the contemporary army tactics, strategies, and logistics such as tents and encampments, various firearms and weapons. Contemporary architecture overview including the rare depiction of the Shaniwar Wada before it was destroyed by the great fire in 1828.
‣ Detailed analysis of the aftermath of the battle and ‘what if’ scenarios such as what was the possible path to the Maratha victory and what would have happened if the Marathas would have won the battle.
