Sawantwadi is one of the 565 principalities in India, but the only principality that has survived many battles and settlements with all its enemies, including the Cholas, Rashtrakutas, Bahmanis, Mughals, Adilshah, Qutbshah, the British and the Portuguese. This state also did not allow the Portuguese to extend their power outside Goa.
